Il tempo è generalmente intorno ai 140 battiti al minuto, le ritmiche sono spesso sincopate e usualmente contengono un solo colpo di rullante, di solito sul terzo quarto. Questo differenzia la dubstep dagli altri generi da ballo come la House e la Techno in quanto la ritmica risulta fuori dalla classica misura di quattro quarti, rallentata e spesso enfatizzata più dalla linea del basso che dalle percussioni.
